Northern Michigan University hockey player Dominik Shine named Offensive Player of the Week in WCHA

MARQUETTE -- Senior forward Dominik Shine of the Northern Michigan University hockey team has been named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week.

It was the second time he's earned this honor as a Wildcat, NMU said in a news release on Monday. The first was last season in early December 2015 after a series against Alabama-Huntsville.

This time, Shine earned the honor after scoring four goals during Northern's home-and-home series against league and Upper Peninsula rival Lake Superior State last weekend.

He scored once in Friday's 3-2 loss in Sault Ste. Marie before posting his second career hat trick in NMU's 6-4 win at home on Saturday. He became the fifth NCAA player this season to get a hat trick with an even-strength, shorthanded and power-play goal.

Since Dec. 1, Shine shares the national lead with eight goals, netting at least one in six of the Wildcats' last seven games, including four straight.

This recent surge places Shine 16th in the NCAA in goal scoring with 12.

He's also joins junior teammate Robbie Payne as Northern players to earn WCHA Offensive Player of the Week accolades this season.

Shine has twice been named a WCHA Player of the Month in his career.

This weekend, the Wildcats plays a home-and-home with LSSU for the second straight weekend, a quirk in the schedule when WCHA teams were forced to move their regular-season final weekend games earlier to accommodate a new extended playoff format.

This time, NMU hosts the Lakers on Friday, then heads east to the Soo on Saturday. Game time each night is 7:07 p.m.
