No bond set for teen in shooting
DETROIT (AP) -- A 16-year-old boy remains locked up in connection with shootings during a holiday event in Detroit.
A juvenile court referee set no bond Saturday and ordered the teen held in a juvenile facility until a scheduled Tuesday appearance before a circuit judge. He was arrested last Sunday -- a day after four teens were wounded during Midtown's Noel Night celebration.
The boy has been charged with four counts of assault with intent to murder. Police Chief James Craig has said the outdoor shooting was related to an argument about high school football.
Defense attorney Marlon Evans says nothing in the teen's record suggests "that this is within his character."
The teen is "adult designated," meaning he can be sentenced as a juvenile, an adult or a blending of the two.
Trial set for western Michigan man
MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) -- A western Michigan man who's charged with killing a 25-year-old gas station clerk is now scheduled to face trial nearly five years after she disappeared.
Court officials have set the trial for Jeffrey Willis to begin March 6. He faces murder and kidnapping charges in the April 2013 disappearance of Jessica Heeringa from the gas station where she worked in Norton Shores. Her body hasn't been found.
Willis has denied having anything to do with her disappearance.
Jurors convicted Willis of first-degree murder last month for the 2014 fatal shooting of Rebekah Bletsch while she was jogging in Muskegon County's Dalton Township. He faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison with no chance for parole.
Initiative provides jackets to kids
DETROIT (AP) -- About 2,000 winter jackets are being given to homeless and parentless children in Michigan as part of the UAW-Ford Jackets for Joy initiative.
UAW-Ford Vice President Jimmy Settles says the organization "felt it was most important to help stand in the gap for youth" that "are without their parents during this holiday season."
The UAW-Ford is a collaboration between United Auto Workers members and Dearborn-based Ford Motor Co.
More than two dozen Detroit-area nonprofits are receiving the jackets for distribution. The final distribution is scheduled Dec. 16 in partnership with the Angel Tree Network, which will give jackets to children whose parents are incarcerated.
Another 3,000 winter jackets also will be given away in other parts of the country.
