3-vehicle car accident in Wisconsin leaves 1 dead

MARQUETTE — A Green Bay, Wisconsin, man died from injuries sustained in a three-vehicle accident Friday afternoon in Marinette County, Wisconsin, authorities said.

The 81-year-old driver, Carl J. Bernetzke, was extricated from his four door sedan following the incident, but died from head injuries en route to the hospital, according to a press release from the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office.

Bernetzke was traveling south on U.S. 141 near Jossart Road in Beecher, Wisconsin, when he was struck by a northbound blue pickup truck that had crossed the centerline.

The driver of the pickup truck, Leroy D. Poglud, 67, of Goodman, Wisconsin, was treated for his injuries at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain, police said.

Authorities said Poglud’s truck also struck a second southbound vehicle, a pickup truck driven by 48-year-old Donald E. Britten Jr., of Langlade, Wisconsin. Britten was not injured in the accident.

Police said the accident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office and coroner.

Assisting at the scene were the Pembine rescue and fire departments, Amberg Fire Department, Beacon Ambulance and the Marinette County deputy coroner.

Police said this is the first traffic fatality of 2017 in Marinette County.
