Explosion, fire destroys Negaunee Township structure

Emergency response

NEGAUNEE — A structure in Negaunee Township caught on fire and exploded Thursday night.

The Negaunee Township Fire Department responded to the scene at NeeJee Road in Negaunee at approximately 11 p.m.

Upon fire officials arrival, the structure was already a complete loss, Marc Herring, first captain of the Negaunee Township Fire Department, said.

“There were no walls left when we arrived,” Herring said. “The roof was where the floor used to be.”

Debris from the explosion was found across NeeJee Road and as far back as the wood line in the backyard of the residence, he said.

No one was home during the time of the explosion. Herring believes the structure to have been the home of two individuals.

The cause of the explosion is not yet known at this time. The investigation is ongoing.

The Negaunee Township Fire Department was assisted on the scene by the Negaunee City Fire Department and Marquette Township Fire Department.

According to Herring, fire officials were on the scene until roughly 3:30 a.m. today.
