Marquette Township seeks input on DDA expansion

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Township Board is requesting public input on a proposed expansion of the Marquette Township Downtown Development Authority district during its regular meeting Tuesday.

The board will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Marquette Township Community Center, located at 1000 Commerce Drive.

The proposed DDA expansion includes properties located south of Orchard Street; property lying north of the Iron Ore Heritage Trail and Brookton Road, and west of Marquette County Road 492; and a parcel lying south and east of County Road 492 and Brookton Road, according to the public notice.

The proposed change includes altering an existing ordinance, due to the involvement of numerous adjacent properties zoned as Development and General Business districts that are not currently within the DDA.

The public hearing affects the DDA boundaries only. The formerly created tax-increment financing district is not under consideration for re-establishment, the notice of public hearing published by the township states.

Copies of the proposed ordinance and a map depicting the downtown district boundaries as amended, are available at the Marquette Township Community for review by the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

All aspects of the proposed boundary amendments will be open for discussion during the public hearing, the notice states, and written communications from any person not wishing to attend the public hearing will also be considered at that time.

The DDA expansion project was initiated Jan. 20, 2015, as the result of the decline in commercial property values within the existing DDA boundary.

At that time, the township board directed the DDA to explore potential boundary expansion, and the DDA was authorized on March 15, 2016, to initiate the expansion process.

The process is expected to culminate with an amended ordinance in July.
