Rock the Socks taking place this week

MARQUETTE — The annual Rock the Socks benefit is taking place this week in the local area, according to a press release from the Marquette Alternative High School, which organizes the effort locally.

Area residents are invited to drop off new pairs of socks for adults and kids at one of several area businesses and schools.

The socks will ultimately be donated to area needy.

The following schools are participating as drop-off sites: Marquette Alternative High School; Marquette Senior High School; Bothwell Middle School; Graveraet Elementary School; MAPS Central Office; Westwood High School; Nice Elementary Schools; North Star Academy; Ishpeming High School; Negaunee High School; and the Northern Michigan University Athletic Department and the Student Social Work Organization.

The businesses that are participating as drop off sites: U.P. Catholic Credit Union (all three branches); Select Realty; Wattsson and Wattsson Jewelers; and Swick.

In past years, a number of local organizations have benefitted from the program, including St. Vincent DePaul Society; Janzen House; local elementary schools; Great Lakes Recovery; the Salvation Army; the Giving Closet; the Marquette Women’s Center; Harbor House; Beacon House; and Room at the Inn.

About 13,000 pairs of socks have been collected and donated since 2013.

Socks can be dropped off through close of business Friday.
