Work began Wednesday to demolish the Sundberg Block on Iron Street in Negaunee. The building and a portion of the sidewalk have been fenced off since the western wall of the building and part of the roof collapsed in March of 2010. The structure, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was condemned by the Marquette County Building Inspector in December 2015, a decision that the owners appealed to the Marquette County Building Codes Board of Appeals. The appeal was denied in September. The owners of the structure lost a bid for an injunction that would have delayed the demolition of the building in Marquette County Circuit court on Monday.
