Car show in Hermansville

HERMANSVILLE – The Hermansville Car Club 16th annual car show will be held Saturday. Registration will be from 8 to 11 a.m. by the IXL Museum on River Street in Hermansville. Registration fee is $5. Proceeds will fund North Central High School Scholarships.

Summer theater schedule posted

MARQUETTE – The Lake Superior Theatre, located at 270 Lake Shore Blvd. in Marquette, has announced its summer season offerings. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. and include:

“Beacon on the Rock” runs July 5-7 and 10-14. This signature original historical musical about mining in the Upper Peninsula returns to celebrate the theater’s 15th anniversary. A musical celebration of our diverse heritage, and the human spirit it is a story about people who came to this isolated region and found a way to survive the natural and social challenges.

“Pirates of Penzance” runs July 17-21 and 24-28. This Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera fairly explodes across the stage with damsels in distress, a sexy pirate king, a delightfully dotty major-general, and a score you will hum all the way home.

“HONK! Jr.” runs Aug. 1-4 and 7-10. This show is a contemporary retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Ugly Duckling.” Presented by Lake Superior Youth Theatre and featuring a cast of area youth.

“Superior Broadway” runs Aug. 14-16. Directed and arranged by Denise Clark, “Superior Broadway” will celebrate the songs and scenes that have been favorites of LST audiences for the last 15 years, pairing them with community talent.

“A Man Named Marquette” runs Aug. 19 and 20. This is an original historical play, written and performed by members of the Lake Superior Youth Theatre, centers around the life of Father Jacques Marquette and the statue in downtown Marquette.

History center offers bus tours

MARQUETTE – The Marquette Regional History Center will offer its Historical Bus Tours at 1 p.m. July 10, 25, and Aug. 1 and 7; and at 6 p.m. July 17, 24, 31, and Aug. 14. All tours will start at the Marquette Regional History Center, 145 W. Spring St.

Participants will meet some of Marquette’s historical figures as they recount their interesting stories and see why Marquette was called the “Queen City of the North.” This is an opportunity to learn about local history and be entertained at the same time.

The bus will travel through the historic downtown business district to Lower Harbor and the still standing DSS&A Ore Dock6, up to the Father Marquette Statue. It will continue through town to the Historic Ridge District, touching on historic homes. Highlighting downtown parks, churches, and notable sites and will continue out to Picnic Rocks and Presque Isle, turning around at the operating LS&I Ore Dock and over the Dead River for the return trip to the History Center. All tours last 90 minutes. Attendees are asked to arrive 10 minutes early.

Summer drama camp in Gwinn

GWINN – The Superior Arts Council is sponsoring a summer drama camp for area students entering third through ninth grade in the fall. Camp dates are July 8-11, 15-18 and 22-25 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Gwinn High School Band Room. “Schoolhouse Rock Live, Jr.” will be produced at 7 p.m. July 25-26 at the Gwinn High School Cafetorium.

Participation in the program is free, and the performances are free and open to the public. All area students, home school students, and those visiting the area are welcome.

Group to discuss Biggers book

MARQUETTE – The Once Upon A Crime Book Group will continue its “reading journey” around the U.S. at 7 p.m. July 10 in the Dandelion Cottage Room at Peter White Public Library. The group will discuss the book “The House without a Key” by Earl Derr Biggers. In Honolulu, Charlie Chan becomes enmeshed in the most baffling mystery he has encountered.

Summer book sale in Negaunee

NEGAUNEE – The Friends of the Negaunee Public Library will hold their summer Annual Book Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 11 at the Negaunee Senior Center. Those wishing to contribute books, puzzles, DVDs, tapes, or electronic games, in good condition, may bring them to the library until July 10.

On July 10, books may be brought directly to the Senior Center side door. All monies raised are used for the benefit of the library.

‘Old Man in Love’ in Curtis

CURTIS – The Erickson Center for the Arts in Curtis will present “Old Man in Love,” a one man, two-act play written and performed by Jay Stielstra. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Judy Banker, Chris Buhalis and Jason Dennie will provide music throughout the performance.

The play features an old man reminiscing about the great loves of his life: the women, and the woods and waters of the Great Lakes country. He shares his memories through monologues, songs, and poetry.

Firecracker run registration open

ISHPEMING – The 24th annual Firecracker 5k and 1-mile run will be held July 4 at the Al Quaal Recreation Park on the trails. Registration is from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and the race will start at 8:45 a.m.

The entry fees costs $16 until Monday. After that date and the day of the race, the cost will be $20.

Ribbons will be awarded to the top three finishers in all age groups. A goody table will be available, and T-shirts will be given to each participant.

Workshop proposals sought

MARQUETTE – Great Lakes Center for Youth Development seeks workshop proposals for the ninth annual U.P. Nonprofit Conference which will be held Friday, Oct. 18 at Northern Michigan University in Marquette.

The conference, themed “Pulling Together. Making a Difference,” will feature workshops that deliver relevant and thought-provoking information and concepts.

Attendees will focus on pulling together resources, knowledge and contacts to make a difference in their communities. The theme stems from the idea of collective impact, an approach to solving societal problems based on the idea that no organization acting alone can solve complex issues.

Rummage sale to aid UPAWS

MARQUETTE – A rummage sale to benefit the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter will continue take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Masonic Building, 128 W. Washington St. in Marquette. The sale will continue Aug. 2-4 in the same location.

Sale items will include baby clothes and supplies, kid toys and games, books, videos, clothes, home decor, new dishes, pet items, exercise equipment and more.

ISHPEMING – Featured on the Ishpeming Area Historical Society’s 11th annual Historic Home Tour from noon to 5 p.m. June 30 are three homes, a former business with its 1930s truck, the “Anatomy of a Murder” signature wall and a garden. Light refreshments will be served at Andriacchi’s Store. The cost of $8 supports the non-profit society as Ishpeming’s history is shared with the community.

ROCK – Rock’s inaugural Country Fair and Classic Car Show will take place Saturday at the Lions Clubhouse grounds on M-35 in Rock. MooseWood offers summer camp

MARQUETTE – The MooseWood Nature Center in Marquette is offering a summer camp called “Roughing It Easy” for children age 9-12 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 9-11. Moosewood Director Andrew Bek will lead this camp and explore living outdoors with activities including basic methods and skills involved in outdoor cooking, how to build a fire and simple recipes to use for quick outdoor cooking using recycled materials.

Special presentation at NMU

MARQUETTE – The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at Northern Michigan University will offer a special presentation titled “Buildings of the Copper Country” by Jane Busch, an architectural historian and preservation consultant. The center also will unveil a newly expanded and improved website for the U.P. Heritage Trail. Both activities are scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday in 105 Cohodas Hall. They are free and open to the public.

Busch will discuss buildings discovered during the Copper Country Survey, set to be completed this year. It is a comprehensive survey of above-ground historic resources in Keweenaw, Houghton, Ontonagon and northwestern Baraga counties.

The UPHTN website expands and updates what was formerly the Western Upper Peninsula Heritage Trail Network website, which launched in 2000.

Group to read Ustinov play

MARQUETTE – Readers Theater will hold a reading of the Peter Ustinov play “Romanoff and Juliet” at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 20 in the Peter White Public Library Shiras Room. Refreshments will be served.

“Romanoff and Juliet” is a comic spoof of the Cold War that is set in a small mythical mid-European country whose leader is wooed by the United States and Soviet Union, each one wanting him as an ally. Russia’s ambassador has a son who falls in love with the daughter of the U.S. diplomat. The two opposing families, one communist, the other capitalist, represent the warring Capulets and Montagues of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.”

Peter Ustinov was renowned as an award-winning actor, writer, dramatist, filmmaker, stage designer, comedian, humorist, newspaper and magazine columnist, radio broadcaster and television presenter. He was also a respected intellectual and diplomat who, in addition to his various academic posts, served as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF and president of the World Federalist Movement.

Thurs. Painters exhibit at MACC

MARQUETTE – The City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center July exhibition will be “All Seasons by Thursday Painters.” The Thursday Painters, first organized 60 years ago, will celebrate their anniversary by exhibiting work that reflects the four seasons of the U.P.

The exhibit is dedicated to the late Ruth Seppala, the group’s earliest member. Other members are Marjorie Carlson, Rosemary Glenn, Esther Lepola, Shirley Michelson, Helen Steinhoff and Betty Shirtz.

The MACC is located on the lower level of Peter White Public Library. A closing reception that will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. July 25.

Music in the Park in Curtis

CURTIS – The Erickson Center for the Arts will kick off its annual Music in the Park series from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday with Open Mic Night in the Erickson Center Park. New this year, the Open Mic Night, for both musicians and vocalists, will give local residents and visitors an opportunity to showcase their talents.

Regional bands performing for the series include Evergreen 7 (Munising), 4 Below Zero (Munising), Jim, Ray & Scott (Marquette), Blue Champagne (Marquette), Hozz (Marquette), Stormfront (Gaylord), and the Jon Archambault Band (Boyne City). A variety of music genres will be performed over the series including classic rock, country, swing, jazz, pop & blues. Most bands will perform original music, as well as covers or music by other recording artists.

Picnic dinners are welcome during Music in the Park. Don’t forget to bring a chair or blanket to sit on. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the Erickson Center. Rain or shine, the concerts will be held. Pre-registration is encouraged for Open Mic Night by calling the office at 906-586-9974. Negaunee work bee planned

NEGAUNEE – The June Negaunee Beautification Committee meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Iron Street Pocket Park. The group will hold a short meeting followed by a work bee to plant annuals and spruce up the park for the summer. Items for the ore cart plantings will be distributed also.

Also, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday members will meet at 1009 Pine St. to help prepare the ore car planter materials.

Library Day planned in Skandia

SKANDIA – Residents of Skandia Township may drop by the Skandia Township Community Center from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday for Skandia Township Library Day.

Those who bring laptop computers may get hands-on help with the newest long distance services offered by Peter White Public Library: how to renew library items online, download audio books and e-books, speak a second language, subscribe to digital magazines, and use the library’s electronic databases without ever leaving home. The library is online, all the time.

Hanka Homestead presentation set

ASKEL – The Hanka Homestead Finnish Museum in Askel will present a Living History Re-enactment at 10 a.m. Friday at the Homestead. Follow U.S. 41 10 miles north of the blinker light in Baraga, turn west on the Arnheim Road, and follow the signs for six miles.

Performances will be at 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m. Friday. Local artists will portray all seven family members, demonstrating skills each had that were necessary for success and survival on an early farm. These include George Kauppila, Helen Leinonen, Rebecca Stroube, Paul Heikkila, George Potvin, Helen Stenvig, and Cole Klein.

Musical entertainment will be provided by FinnAire from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the Finnish dance troupe Vinksin Vonksin will perform at 3:30 p.m. Free coffee and nisu will be available, along with other refreshments for purchase.

The public is welcome to join the celebration of local heritage at the Hanka Homestead.

Exhibit features Hamilton, Savu

MARQUETTE – Internationally known story-educator, three-time Emmy Award winner and Parent’s Choice Nominee Bobby Norfolk will present “A Living History of George Washington Carver” at 7 p.m. June 17 in the Peter White Public Library Community Room.

Animal-palooza at kids museum

MARQUETTE – The Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum will hold its next Second Thursday Creativity Series program “Animal-palooza” Thursday. All area families may meet some special friends and have an evening of fun, hands-on activities with an animal theme. As always, there will be creative snacks, music and more.

This series for pre-school and elementary-age children and their caregivers will run from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. The event is free with admission or museum membership.

8-18 training session slated

MARQUETTE – 8-18 Media, the youth journalism bureau of the Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum, will offer a new members training session for its Marquette and Ishpeming Bureaus from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the museum.

8-18 Media is a youth journalism, empowerment and leadership program open to all kids ages eight to 18. The members work in teams to produce stories on youth-related issues for Marquette Monthly, for radio stations Q107-WMQT and WNMU Public Radio 90 and for occasionally for other media outlets. Members choose and research topics, conduct interviews and write the stories.

Pioneer Princess deadline June 14

NEGAUNEE – Applications are available for the official Negaunee Irontown Association’s 2013 Pioneer Princess Pageant to take place at 7 p.m. July 11 in the Negaunee High School auditorium.

The event is open to girls age 7 to 10 living in or attending in the Negaunee School District. The pageant is limited to 15 contestants; entries will be drawn at random from the applicants received. Those not selected will be notified and their entry fee returned.

Pioneer Princess duties include: throwing the first pitch for the Alumni Softball Championship in July; awarding the alumni softball T-shirts to the winning team in July; riding with Santa on the firetruck to the annual Christmas tree lighting and Santa visit in November; and taking the first dunk in the annual N.I.T. Class A Slam Dunk Competition in April.

Group to discuss Hillerman novel

Negaunee Band concerts begin

NEGAUNEE – The Negaunee City Band will begin its free summer concert series at 7:30 p.m. June 12 at the Outdoor Performing Arts Center at the east end of Iron Street. The band will play weekly though Aug. 7, with all concerts scheduled for Wednesday evenings. Some seating is available, but attendees may wish to bring their own chairs.

The band also will participate in several parades, including the Firemen’s Memorial Parade today in Negaunee. The band will march in Negaunee’s Pioneer Days Parade on July 13, Ishpeming’s Independence Day Parade, and the Gwinn Fun Daze Parade on July 27. The latter appearance also will include a concert.

Altered Book workshop offered

MARQUETTE – A workshop titled “Altered Books: Creating Artwork from your shelf” will be offered from 5:30 to 8 p.m. June 12, 19 and 26 at the Marquette Regional History Center. Participants will learn how to use tossed-away texts to make them into a sculptural piece.

Summer camp at MooseWood

MARQUETTE – MooseWood Nature Center in Marquette is offering Natural Fun with Stories and Crafts, a new summer camp for children age 3 to 10. This weeklong camp will meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m. June 24-28.

Local event coordinator Marcia Parkkonen will lead the camp with activities that will include crafts, music and games centered on the themes: A Glimpse of Nature’s Wonders, Rock It Around the Block, Water Water Everywhere, Creating With Colors, and Celebrating The U.P.’s Sunshine. Library to screen ‘Hitchcock’

Bass tourney slated

MICHIGAMME – The Rock Bass Tournament and DNR Free Fishing Weekend will be held Saturday, June 8. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Michigamme Park Pavilion and Brown Road Access Site.
