MARQUETTE -- Officers from the Marquette Police Department today arrested Alex David Wiitanen, 20, of Marquette, for his alleged involvement in vandalizing the Phil Niemisto statue in a downtown Marquette pocket park.
Damage to the statue was reported to police on Saturday, according to a police press release issued today. The statue's hat and scarf were also stolen.
Warrants were authorized by the Marquette County Prosecutor's Office for malicious destruction of tombs and memorials less than $200 and for larceny less than $200, the release states.
Wiitanen was released upon posting a $500 bond. Both the hat and scarf of the statue have been recovered by police.
