Saluting Our Servicemembers
Honoring the veterans in our county and around the country
The Upper Peninsula, it is said, never forgets its veterans – the people who donned our country’s military uniform and took up arms at a time when they were needed most. We have always honored their service though memorials, special days and events.
This video presentation, and an accompanying written section, is an extension of that recognition.
“Service and Sacrifice” is a living record of military service through the eyes of Upper Peninsula veterans. But who were these people and why did they serve as they did?
As remarkable as their accomplishments were, the veterans we interviewed were uncommonly common. They came from all walks of life in the U.P. In other words, they are us, citizen soldiers, sailors, airmen and women and Marines who stepped up on our behalf.
Mining Journal reporter Anthony Anderson did the heavy lifting on this project. We thank him for his good reporting.
The veterans featured in the videos and articles are:
• David John Bivins, Army National Guard
• Jill Weingarten, Army: Signal Corps
• Robert Finkbeiner, Army: Scout Dog Corps
