Ishpeming-Negaunee High School nordic skiers compete for first time

MARQUETTE – Two skiers from each team were winners at a nordic ski meet held Jan. 5 between the new Ishpeming-Negaunee High School squad and Marquette Senior High School at the Forestville Trailhead of the Noquemanon Trail Network in Marquette Township.

Marquette’s Ericka Asmus won the girls 5-kilometer race in 18 minutes, 30 seconds and teammate Logan Zueger took the boys 5K in 14:25.

Ishpeming-Negaunee’s Timothy Ziegler took the boys 2.5K race in 9:50 while west end teammate Talon Prusi took the girls 2.5K in 14:52.

Formed by the Ishpeming Ski Club, this was the first race for the 23-member I-N team that also includes middle school-age students. The team participates in both cross country skiing, ski jumping and Nordic combined, the two disciplines together.

In the girls 5K, Asmus and runner-up Isabel Carr, who clocked 18:45, led a top-four sweep by Marquette, with Ishpeming’s top finisher Rieka Buchenau.

Boys 2.5K runner-up was Alec Prusi of I-N in 10:54 and girls 2.5K second-place finisher was Salaana Pletka of Marquette in 15:37.
