Redettes post soccer shutouts
MINOCQUA, Wis. — The Marquette Senior High School girls soccer team posted shutouts in both of its games at the Lakeland Thunderbird Shootout this weekend, defeating host Lakeland Union 7-0 on Friday and Hayward, Wisconsin, 2-0 on Saturday.
The Redettes jumped out to a 5-0 halftime lead on Friday with sophomore Paige Britton getting two of the goals.
Junior Reegan Ketzenberger started the scoring off a corner kick by junior captain Emilee Gooch, then Britton knocked home back-to-back goals. Her second score came after senior captain Lauren Kurzawa brought it down the side of the field.
Sophomore Averie Kelly made it 4-0 off an assist from junior Rachel Hoult before junior Ivy Pickard rounded out the first-half scoring.
Kurzawa and sophomore McKayla Quigley scored Marquette’s second-half goals.
On Saturday, speed and defense were noted as keys in a closely contested game.
Pickard netted the only goal of the first half off an assist from Britton that turned into a breakaway against Hayward’s stalwart defense.
Britton needed much of the second half to make it 2-0 with an assist from Kurzawa.
Redettes sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Lake extended her shutout string to four games with the defense getting a big assist, particularly against the speedy Hayward team.
Kudos went to defenders Sophie Bartlett and captain Natalie Robinia, both seniors, and Kelly and Taylor Ragusett, each a sophomore.
Up next for MSHS is a home game against Sault Ste. Marie at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at high school turf field.
