Rain shortens West PAC tourney to just Miners’ win at Ishpeming

By Journal Sports Staff

ISHPEMING — The entire West PAC high school softball tournament may last just three innings this spring.

That’s how many innings Negaunee needed to post a 15-0 mercy rule-shortened victory at Ishpeming in a preliminary round game played Friday afternoon.

Today’s remaining games to be played in Hancock and Calumet among eight teams, including the Miners, Westwood, Gwinn and L’Anse, have been postponed due to a forecast of all-day rain throughout the Upper Peninsula.

It’s likely they won’t be made up with tight schedules all around after a number of earlier postponements this spring.

This same rain forecast has also caused organizers of today’s Negaunee Invitational tennis meet to cancel it.

On Friday, Miners aces Skylar Hall and Abby Nelson combined to limit the Hematites to just one hit, a leadoff double by Madison Pruett in the bottom of the first.

Hall got the win, going the first two innings and striking out three, while Nelson pitched the third with two Ks as neither hurler issued a walk.

Negaunee’s 13-hit attack was led by Hannah Voskuhl as she went 3 for 3 with a triple and double, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Nelson and teammates Mykenna Kontio, Katelyn Lammi, Payton Drew each had two hits, with Kontio going 2 for 2 with a triple, two RBIs and three runs.

“The girls came up and hit the ball hard; there weren’t too many cheap hits,” Miners coach Randy Carlson said.

Both of Friday’s combatants are scheduled to play a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Monday. Negaunee goes to Houghton while Ishpeming hosts Calumet.
