ISHPEMING — Experience gained before the season ever began pays off early in a spring like this.

After having several matches earlier in the week canceled due to poor weather, Westwood powered its way to an 8-0 victory over visiting Gwinn in a high school boys tennis meet held Friday afternoon at the Patriots’ courts.

“It was nice to be able to get a meet in after having to cancel two earlier this week,” WHS coach Chris Jackson said. “The kids have done a nice job of handling the difficult weather we’ve had early in the season.

“We are fortunate to have a lineup with kids that come into the season with a lot of experience.”

The Patriots dropped just 10 games in the seven contested matches after the Modeltowners were forced to default at No. 4 singles.

The best contested matches came at the top two singles flights. Westwood No. 1 Adam Hyttinen held off Jacob Porubsky 6-1, 6-3, while Pats’ No. 2 Anthony Couveau fended away Jared Rowland 6-0, 6-3.

In addition, WHS’ No. 1 doubles tandem of Zach Niemi and Hudson Uren scored a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mason Bockert and Chris Sirois, while Westwood No. 2 doubles pairing of Connor Traver and Nathen Ostlund put together a 6-1, 6-0 win over Aaron Borrett and John Deatrick.

Each of the three matches at the Nos. 3 and 4 flights were 6-0, 6-0 shutouts for the Patriots.

Westwood has a big home match against Upper Peninsula Division 1 power Negaunee at 4 p.m. Monday, while Gwinn is back in action at 4 p.m. Tuesday with a home match against Munising. Westwood also hosts Iron Mountain at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
