Mattson can’t carry L’Anse

By Journal Sports Staff

L’ANSE — L’Anse’s Addison Mattson sank a trio of 3-pointers and scored a game-high 13 points, but it wasn’t enough to keep Calumet from posting a 66-47 high school girls basketball victory at the Purple Hornets’ gym on Thursday night.

The Copper Kings extended a narrow 17-14 lead after one quarter into a 33-22 advantage by halftime. Then Calumet pulled further away in the third, leading 50-32 entering the final quarter.

Mattson’s teammates Brianna Keinz and Maija Rice added nine points while Josie Rice had eight for L’Anse.

Calumet countered with Lizzie Torola scoring 12 points and Jana Loukus and Elli Djerf adding 10 apiece. The Copper Kings showed their balanced scoring as Marybeth Halonen and Celia Kiilunen added nine points each and Ava Anderson had eight.

The Hornets are back in action Monday night with a home game against the Upper Peninsula’s No. 1 team in Divisions 1-3, West Iron County.

Calumet is at U.P. No. 2 in Divisions 1-3, Negaunee, on Tuesday.
