By Iron Mountain Daily News

KINGSFORD — Negaunee lost a pair of high school wrestling matches at a quadrangular held in Kingsford on Thursday.

The Miners fell to Iron Mountain 48-25 and to Kingsford 42-28. The fourth team at the meet was Gladstone.

Negaunee’s Leo Helppi (189) registered a pin and Corey Sansom (119) won by decision against Kingsford.

The Flivers got wins from August Early (125), Ethan Wilcox (130), Toby Wilcox (140), Logan Crago (171), Trevor Povolo (160) and Eddie Cardew (285).

“Trevor Povolo has had some tough matches this year,” Flivvers’ coach Darren Groleau said.

“Once we get him going he’ll be tough. Logan Crago is wrestling very well.”

Negaunee’s Finn Helppi won by decision and Leo Helppi (189) outlasted Burklund 7-4 against IM.

The Mountaineers got pins from Parker Stroud (112), Isaac Manier (119), Trevor Malburg (125), Dow Dawson (140), Myles Carey (160) and Giovanni Colavecchi (285).

“I was really impressed with our first-year wrestlers,” IM coach Cory McLaren said.

“Myles Carey grinds every time he is on the mat and keeps improving.

“Freshman Isaac Manier has been a pleasant surprise this year. He has been such a soft spoken kid at practice but when he gets on the mat he turns it on and wrestles aggressive.”
