GWINN — After starting the season 0-3, the Houghton Gremlins have now won two straight contests after topping the Gwinn Modeltowners on the road Friday night, 38-0.

The Gremlins made life difficult for the Modeltowners, who were playing without one of their starting running backs after he was hurt in warm-ups, though it wasn’t clear which player it was. Houghton (2-3) jumped out to a 22-0 lead at halftime. To add insult to injury, the Modeltowners lost starting quarterback Caleb Anderson before the half ended as well.

For the Gremlins, the win was another confidence booster.

“It was an outstanding effort,” assistant coach Micah Stipech said. “This was a huge morale boost for the boys.

“High school sports are full of ups and downs … but every week, the team has improved. We are now five weeks in and things are starting to click.”

The Gremlins made three interceptions, including two by Nathan Erva, who was moved to safety this week. Erva also factored into the offense, scoring two touchdowns, one running and one receiving.

Sam Keskimaki factored with offense from the defensive side as he snatched up an interception and ran it back for a touchdown.

“The interceptions were huge for us,” Stipech said.

Starting at $3.23/week.
