Hawks break things open in 4th

WATERSMEET — Republic-Michigamme broke open a close game in the fourth quarter to close out its regular season with a 60-42 victory at Watersmeet on Friday night.

The game, a makeup from Jan. 23, was 38-34 in favor of the Hawks before R-M (8-12, 3-11 Copper Mountain Conference) poured in 22 points in the fourth quarter.

Dylan Hanninen and Kasey Ball each scored seven points in the quarter for the Hawks.

Teammate River Shumate scored 10 of his game-high 21 points in the third. Hanninen finished with 18 and Ball nine.

Ben Winkka led the Nimrods (1-16, 0-11) with 15 points, while Julius Borajes added 11.

R-M had small leads of 10-7 after one quarter and 23-18 at halftime.

Watersmeet opens the Class D district hosted by Bessemer with a home game against Wakefield-Marenisco on Monday. The winner hosts the Hawks on Wednesday for a berth in the district championship game.
