I-N Gators swimmers sweep Pats

NEGAUNEE — A trio of Ishpeming-Negaunee swimmers had a hand in four victories as the cooperative — known as the Gators — swept Westwood in a high school swimming and diving dual meet held Thursday.

The I-N girls won nine of 12 events in a close 89-78 decision as Jaden West and MaKenzee VanBuren each won two individual events and swam with two winning relays.

West took the 200 individual medley in 2 minutes, 30.02 seconds and 100 butterfly in 1:10.96, while VanBuren won the 50 freestyle in 29.07 seconds and 100 free in 1:05.58.

West also swam with the 200 medley relay winners, VanBuren with the 200 free relay victors and both were on the winning 400 free relay.

The I-N boys won eight events in a 108-60 victory as Keegan McGonigle won two individual events and swam with two winning relay teams.

He won the 50 free in 25.32 and 100 free in 56.93 while swimming with the Gators’ victorious 200 free relay and 400 free relay.

Four more I-N swimmers were three-time winners. For the boys, Thomas LaFave won the 200 IM in 2:48.77, 100 fly in 1:09.78 and swam with the 400 free relay.

Among the girls, the Gators’ Annika Tervo took the 100 backstroke in 1:22.14 and Mandy Helppi the 200 free in 3:15.40 as both were on the winning 200 medley relay and 200 free relay squads.

In addition, teammate Breanna Johnson was a member of all three winning relays.

For the Westwood boys, who also won the 200 medley relay, Joseph Boburka took the diving with 163.85 points and the 100 breast in 1:20.22, while Blake Forbes won the 500 free in 7:21.76.

Among the Patriots girls, Bethany Laakso won the diving with 162.9 points, Stephanie Conery the 500 free in 7:46.70 and Autumn Dakota the 100 breaststroke in 1:38.72.
