By Sault Ste. Marie Evening News Staff

FRANKFORT – Newberry had no answers to contain Frankfort in a Division 8 pre-district football playoff game Friday night.

Frankfort’s Griffin Kelly ran for 268 yards and four touchdowns as the Panthers rolled past Newberry 48-6.

Newberry’s lone touchdown came in the second quarter. The Indians capped an 8-play, 63 yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass from George Sevarns to Jaylen James with four minutes left before halftime.

Frankfort led 28-6 at the half, as Kelly scored on runs of 51, 24 and 41 yards, and he also hauled in a 18-yard TD catch from quarterback Kirk Myers.

Kelly had another touchdown run to cap the opening drive on the second half. The Panthers added two more TDs in the third quarter.

Frankfort (8-2) avances to the district final against the winner of today’s Munising vs. Gaylord St. Mary game.

Newberry, which entered the playoffs averaging 35 ppg., was limited to only 115 yards of total offense.

Newberry’s David Carlson had an interception in the second quarter.

Sevarns finishes as Newberry’s all-time single season passing leader with 1,665 yards, which broke a record set by John Paramski last year.

The Indians close their season with a 6-3 record. Newberry will lose 18 seniors to graduation.

Next year’s season opener is at Frankfort.
