MARQUETTE — Marquette’s Liam Robinson advanced the furthest on Saturday of seven area bowlers who qualified for the MHSAA Individual Bowling Finals at a pair of downstate locations.

The Marquette Senior High School senior made it through six games of qualifying and two rounds of match play before being eliminated in the semifinals of the Division 2 boys tournament at the Super Bowl in the Detroit suburb of Canton.

Robinson, one of three MSHS boys at the singles finals, rolled 1,220 for six games of qualifying, an average of 203.3, to make the 16-bowler qualifying cut in seventh place out of 60 bowlers entered. That included high games of 247 and 246.

He missed the top qualifying spot by 109 pins, but also had 62 pins between himself and first bowler out in 17th place. Scores were wiped out except to determine seeding for matches.

In match play, Robinson opened by rolling games of 147 and 176 to defeat No. 10 seeded Carson Clark of Lowell, 323-304. He then bowled 165 and 188 to take out No. 2 Johnathon Cole of Riverview, 353-285, before hitting 174 and 175 in a 409-349 loss to No. 3 David Northouse of Byron Center.

Northouse went on to win the state tile in the next round, 458-413 over Austin Robison of Sturgis.

Marquette senior teammate Hunter Negri was 27th in qualifying with 1,127, including a 223 top game, to miss the cut by 33 pins, while MSHS sophomore Mason Garceau tied for 40th with 1,038, including a 205.

In addition, Upper Peninsula singles champion Brooke Fornetti missed the Division 2 girls cut by just three pins, shooting 1,091.
