Gwinn’s Roberts finishes fifth in 189 lbs. bracket

By Journal Sports Staff

AUBURN HILLS — Manistique’s Tanner Gonzalez capped off an impressive undefeated season with a state championship Saturday at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Gonzalez won the MHSAA Division 4 160 lbs. bracket by defeating Johnathan Stid of Dansville. He beat Carlos Garza of Hart by a 9-3 decision Friday to reach the final match.

Gwinn’s Kevin Roberts also found success at the meet as he finished fifth overall at 189 lbs. after pinning Kody Ebersole of Napoleon during the second period. Roberts also defeated Mason Rife of Webberville earlier in the day, but then lost to Chase Gibson of Bronson, which put him in the fifth place match.

Roberts is the first Gwinn wrestler to place at the state tournament.
