3 Redmen icers earn league honors

CALUMET — Marquette junior forward Joey Phillips, junior defenseman Aydin Frost and sophomore goaltender Tyler Bergwall have earned all-conference honors from the Great Lakes Hockey Conference.

Phillips and Frost were named to the league’s Second Team, while Bergwall made the Honorable Mention list.

Phillips has 12 goals and 15 assists in 25 games this season, along with 20 penalty minutes and a plus-minus rating of plus-9, according to MSHS head coach Doug Garrow.

Frost has one goal and eight assists in 23 games, compiling just two penalty minutes with a plus-3 rating.

And Bergwall, who splits time with Dylan Sibilsky in the Redmen net, has appeared in 12 games and has a 7-4-1 record with a goals-against average of 1.96 and saves percentage of .919. He’s allowed just 23 goals to get by him all season.

GLHC co-champion Calumet swept the special awards — senior forward Rory Anderson was named Player of the Year and Dan Giachino the Coach of the Year.

The other co-champ, Hancock, split the six picks with the Copper Kings on the league’s First Team.

From the Bulldogs are sophomore forward Alex Nordstrom, junior forward Teddy Randell and junior goalie Dawson Kero.

Representing Calumet are sophomore forward Brent Loukus and senior defensemen Trevor Johnson and Jack Sturos.

Second Team — Jacob Kruse, sr. forward, Houghton; Dawson McKay, jr. forward, Houghton, Kevin Bostwick, soph. defenseman, Houghton; Nick Voelker, jr. goaltender, Calumet.

Honorable Mention — Ed Beiring, sr. forward, Calumet; Daunte Fortner, sr. forward, Kingsford; Lance Kangas, sr. forward, Hancock; Garth Wickham, sr. forward, Escanaba; Paul Carne, sr. defenseman, Escanaba; Tanner Givens, sr. defenseman, Hancock; Alek Shanks, sr. defenseman, Kingsford.
