GWINN — More than 40 percent of high school swimmers and divers honored as All-Upper Peninsula came from area teams.

Fifteen of the 37 honorees were from the area, including 10 from Marquette Senior High School, which won the boys team title.

There were also two from Ishpeming-Negaunee, two from Westwood and one from Manistique.

Area swimmers missed the top awards, however. Trista McDowell of Rudyard was named Female Swimmer of the Year, Matt LeClaire of Gladstone the Male Swimmer of the Year and Erik Johnson of Houghton the Coach of the Year.

The MSHS boys had six honored swimmers — junior Ryan Glover and seniors Andrew Kilpela, Matt Kurin, Ben Luke, Matt Nykanen and Jed Weber.

The Redettes had four of their girls swimmers awarded — senior Lauren Rotundo and freshmen Taryn Aho, Paige Whaley and Jayme Winn.

From I-N, there were two boys swimmers honored, seniors Coltin Chapman and Ethan Wallner.

From Westwood, both honorees were divers — freshman Bethany Laakso on the girls team and freshman Brock Sundberg on the boys.

And Manistique’s honored diver was sophmore Abby Burnham.

Here are the other honorees. All are honored in swimming except as noted:

Boys — Andrew Dykema and Matt LeClaire, Gladstone; Andrew Innerebner, Leevi Olson and Drake Perez, Sault Ste. Marie; Peter Jaszczak, Leo Wheeler, Sal Sharp (diving) and Andrew Garland (diving), Houghton; Caleb Plumbley, Kingsford.

Girls — Esther Berkompas and Trista McDowell, Rudyard; Toni DeMerse, Kingsford; Sydney Herioux, Taylor McFarlane, Liz Stephenson, Claire Tembreull and Kristen Williams, Gladstone; Josie Ledgerwod, Tessa Meyer and Samantha Olsen, Houghton; Ellie Raffaele (diving), Sault Ste. Marie.
