Seaborg, Gencheff, Kirk lead MSHS skiers

By Journal Sports Staff

MARQUETTE — Three Marquette Senior High School skiers picked up individual victories as their school swept to boys and girls titles at the Marquette Invitational downhill meet held at Marquette Mountain on Friday.

Brad Seaborg had a more than four-second victory in the two-run boys slalom, while teammate Eric Gencheff nipped Seaborg by less than a quarter-second to take the giant slalom.

In addition, Ainsley Kirk skied off to the girls giant slalom title.

Marquette’s boys scored 38 points as runner-up Traverse City West scored 67. Ironwood was third with 84 and Norway had 114.

The Redettes won a closer girls race, scoring 53 points to Houghton’s 60 as TC West had 76.

Seaborg clocked runs of 37.54 and 37.84 seconds to win the slalom in 1:15.38. Also from Marquette, Drew Thomas was second in 1:19.79, Adam Skendzel fourth in 1:22.22 and Dylan Robinia fifth in 1:25.56.

In GS, Gencheff had runs of 30.06 and 30.38 for a 1:00.44 total, just ahead of Seaborg’s 1:00.63. Thomas was third in 1:01.75 and Skendzel fourth in 1:02.25. Because of Marquette’s large group, Seaborg and Thomas raced as JVs in GS.

Kirk clocked 32.11 and 32.51 for a 1:04.62 winning time in girls slalom. Also from MSHS, Natalie Robinia was third in 1:06.66, Jacey Johnson fourth in 1:07.52 and Sadah Scheidt fifth in 1:07.72. Robinia and Johnson were JVs.

In girls slalom, Jenna Stein of Houghton broke the MSHS stranglehold, clocking 43.03 and 42.43 for a 1:25.46 total. For Marquette, Scheidt was runner-up in 1:26.85, Johnson fourth in 1:30.95, Robinia eighth in 1:36.44 and Clara Smith 12th in 1:40.30.
