EAST LANSING — Five area high school student-athletes, including two from Ishpeming, are among the 120 finalists for 32 Scholar-Athlete awards presented by the Michigan High School Athletic Association.

They are Ashok Ravindran and Khora Swanson of Ishpeming, Amber Nicole Manitowabi-Huebner of Marquette, Bailey Downs of Munising and Maysa Sitar of Newberry.

All are Class C finalists except Huebner, whose school is in Class A.

The 28th annual Scholar-Athlete Award program presents a $1,000 scholarship to each winner from Farm Bureau Insurance.

Students who participate in at least one sport with an MHSAA-sponsored tournament are eligible.

The winners are presented proportionally by school classification and equally between boys and girls.

Ishpeming was one of two Upper Peninsula schools and 18 in the state with mutliple finalists, the other U.P. school being Sault Ste. Marie.

More than 1,500 applications were received before the finalist list was whittled to 120.
