Marquette icers fall to East Grand Rapids

By Journal Sports Staff

CHELSEA — After picking up a tie Friday night at the Chelsea Showcase, the Marquette Redmen hockey team couldn’t get a victory Saturday as it fell to East Grand Rapids 4-2.

EGR opened up the scoring with a first period goal by Alex West and it maintained a 1-0 lead heading into the second.

The two teams exchanged goals in a see-saw affair during the second frame.

Marquette (12-6-2) tied the game at 1-1 on a goal by Sean O’Connor, but that was answered by a tally by EGR’s Camdon Whallon. The Redmen knotted the score at 2-2 at the 2:03 mark on a goal by Hunter Doucette, but EGR took the lead again when Mike Malowitz scored with 33 seconds left in the period.

EGR then capped off its win with a power play goal by Collin Stecco at the 11:02 mark of the third period.

“We played late last night, so we had a quick turnaround today,” Marquette head coach Doug Garrow said. “We’re not used to that and we looked tired. We played hard, but we just couldn’t keep up.”

Marquette hosts Hancock Feb. 9 at Lakeview Arena.
