By Journal Sports Staff

SAULT STE. MARIE — The Marquette Redmen hockey team came out of this weekend’s Sault Ste. Marie Showcase with a split.

The Redmen (2-2) fell to Utica Eisenhower 5-2 Friday, but bounced back to defeat Romeo 3-2 in overtime Saturday.

Junior forward Joe Philips notched the game-winning goal Saturday at the 1:41 mark of the extra session with Sean O’Connor earning the assist.

“We got some good puck luck today,” Marquette head coach Doug Garrow said. “The guys played hard and it was nice to get out with one win.”

Marquette struck first on a goal by senior forward Ryan Morrissey at the 5:16 mark of the opening period. However, Romeo scored two power play goals just 30 seconds apart late in the frame to take a 2-1 lead.

After a scoreless second period, the Redmen tied the game on a tally by junior defenseman Aydin Frost at the 8:58 mark of the third to send the game into overtime.

Marquette hosts Calumet Tuesday at Lakeview Arena.
