Phillips nets OT winner for Redmen icers at home

MARQUETTE — They don’t get paid anything extra, but the Marquette Senior High School hockey team still has to like working overtime this season.

The Redmen won in OT for the third time this season to even their record at 3-3 with a 1-0 victory over Warren De La Salle Collegiate at Lakeview Arena on Friday night.

The teams meet again at Lakeview at 1 p.m. today.

On Friday, junior Joe Phillips ended the game with 1:22 left in OT when he sent a shot from the top of the circle above Warren goalie Andrew Grewette’s blocker pad.

Sean O’Connor, who was joined by fellow sophomore Thomas Dunleavy in getting an assist, passed the puck to Phillips near the center-ice red line as they made a rush into the Pilots’ zone.

“It was a hard-fought, up-and-down, physical game,” MSHS coach Doug Garrow said.

He said that both teams had just a few good scoring chances.

Grewette made 27 saves, including five in OT, while Marquette sophomore goalie Tyler Bergwall had 25 stops, six of them coming in OT.
