By Journal Sports Staff

NEWBERRY — Senior Taylor Bryant tied a school record with 12 steals while stuffing most of the rest of the stats sheet to lead Newberry to a 46-25 home victory over Cheboygan in high school girls basketball on Friday night.

Bryant also scored 20 points, pulled down seven rebounds and made five assists, all tops for the Indians in their season opener.

Teammate Megan Grigg added 11 points as Newberry raced to a 14-5 lead after one quarter.

“We had some foul trouble in the second quarter — three of our starters all had two fouls,” NHS coach Fred Bryant said.

The Indians led 19-8 at halftime and 28-17 after three quarters before erupting in the final period.
