Parkside edges NMU by a single goal for 2nd time in a week

By Journal Sports Staff

MARQUETTE — Goalkeeper Brianna Frontuto gave up just one goal for the Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team while stopping eight shots, but it was enough to give visiting Wisconsin-Parkside a 1-0 victory on Friday afternoon.

It marked the second time in less than a week that the teams tangled in a nonconference game, even though both are GLIAC members. Last Saturday, the Rangers also won by one goal, 2-1, in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

WP’s Alexis Baker scored the game’s only goal at the NMU Soccer Field unassisted in the 19th minute, one of five shots, including four on goal, that she put on Frontuto.

The NMU goalie faced four shots on goal each half, while counterpart Adrianna Bratel faced four on goal in the first half and just one after intermission.

Parkside also held a 16-13 overall shots advantage and a narrow 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore midfielder Caroline Halonen led NMU with six total shots, two on goal, while defender Isablea Cardoso had three shots, also with two on goal.

Northern (1-5) remains at home for another nonconference game against a GLIAC member, Purdue Northwest, at 1 p.m. Sunday.
