NMU runners 6th overall at Spartan Invite

EAST LANSING — Northern Michigan University finished sixth overall and second among NCAA Division II teams at the Spartan Invitational women’s cross country meet held at Michigan State’s Forest Akers East Golf Course on Friday.

Senior Katelyn Smith led the Wildcats by finishing the six-kilometer course in 22 minutes, 31.8 seconds, good for 22nd place. Freshman teammate Madison Malon was next for NMU, 32nd in 22:44.3.

Also scoring for NMU was junior Ellise Longley, 59th in 23:24.9; senior Hanna Torvi, 81st in 23:50.1; and sophomore Anna Kelley, 92nd in 24:07.8.

With the meet featuring 26 teams, including 22 in Division II, Northern scored 230 points as the host Spartans won with 16 points and Division II and fellow GLIAC member Grand Valley State was runner-up with 68.

Fourteen other NMU runners also finished in the field of 291 runners — senior Paige Du Bois was 102nd in 24:17.8, freshman Meghan Langworthy 112th in 24:26.0, freshman Paige Saiz 124th in 24:46.7, sophomore Katrina Salmen 127th in 24:49.3, freshman Caroline Vegeberg 139th in 25:03.8, freshman Emily Sterling 151st in 25:09.3, freshman Morgan Lyon 152nd in 25:09.8, freshman Kimberly Carviou 170th in 25:37.6, sophomore Aubrey Friedrich 202nd in 26:23.3, sophomore Chrysanthe Patselas 210th in 26:34.6, freshman Katie Cleven 224th in 27:12.8, freshman Delaney Pickett 248th in 28:22.0, sophomore Carrie Duerksen 252nd in 28:39.1 and sophomore Sydney Ormsbee 255th in 28:52.3.
