Volleyball ‘Cats sweep in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — The Northern Michigan University volleyball team has now built a four-match winning streak after winning all three of its matches at the Midwest Region Conference Crossover.

The Wildcats swept the Missouri University Science & Technology in three sets Saturday afternoon after downing Southern Indiana in four sets earlier in the day.

NMU (14-8) defeated Missouri S&T 25-15, 25-22, 25-23, while taking out Southern Indiana 25-23, 20-25, 25-14, 25-17.

Against Missouri S&T, senior Maggie Liebeck paced the offense with 13 kills, while senior Autumn Monsma had 10 and senior Jessica Skonning and junior Sarah Kuehn each added seven. Senior Lynzi Svoboda finished the match with 35 assists as Monsma also had a team-high three service aces.

Senior Rachel Braunschweig led the defense with 13 digs, while Svoboda added nine and Monsma and freshman Alli Yacko had seven apiece.

Monsma also had four block assists while Kuehn and sophomore Cierra Martinez each had three.

Against Southern Indiana, Svoboda became the 16th NMU player to achieve 1,000 assists as she had 45.

The Wildcats came back from a 23-19 deficit in the first set to win on a Braunschweig ace.

Monsma, who became the 17th Northern player to reach the 1,000 digs in Friday’s win over Cedarville, had 10 digs in this match to go with a career-high 23 kills and hitting percentage of .388.

Svoboda also had 10 digs, while Liebeck posted 12 kills and Kuehn had nine and Skonning seven.

Yacko made a career-high five aces along with nine digs, while Braunschweig had two to go with a team-best 16 digs. Liebeck and Kuehn each had two blocks.

The Wildcats return to GLIAC action when they host Saginaw Valley State at 7 p.m. Friday and Lake Superior State for Senior Day at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
