Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site Greco-Roman wrestlers medal at US Senior Open

MARQUETTE — Ten Greco-Roman wrestlers from the Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site qualified for the upcoming Senior World Team Trials with a top-seven finish at the U.S. Senior Open in Las Vegas on Friday.

Three of the wrestlers won medals in Las Vegas — Dalton Roberts at 60 kilograms (132.3 pounds) won gold, Sam Jones at 63 kg (138.9 lbs.) took silver and Randon Miranda at 55 kg (121.3 lbs.) earned bronze.

Roberts, who was seeded No. 3 in Las Vegas, was named Outstanding Wrestler there after he edged Mike Fuenffinger of the U.S. Army 9-8 in his championship match. Roberts had built a 9-2 lead after one period.

Roberts outscored his opponents 27-4 in his first three matches en route to the final, downing Justin Feldman of Camarillo 8-0 in 19 seconds, defeating Ty Pelot of X-Factor Elite Wrestling 10-0 and taking out No. 2-seeded Taylor LaMont of Sunkist Kids 9-4 in the semifinals.

By winning gold, Roberts receives an automatic berth into the best-of-three finals at the Senior World Team Trials, to be held June 8 in Indianapolis.

Jones faced Ryan Mango of the Army in his gold-medal match, falling behind 4-1 after one period before losing the match 6-3.

Miranda was set to face NMU-OTS teammate Kyndall Rutz in the third-place match and won by forfeit.

Austin Morrow — 67 kg (147.7 lbs.), 4th place, final match lost to Jamel Johnson, Marines, 9-0

Anthonie Linares — 67 kg, 5th place, final match won by injury default over Raymond Bunker, Marines

Logan Kass — 72 kg (158.7 lbs.), 5th place, final match defeated Nick Tarpley, New York Athletic Club, 8-0

Jesse Porter — 77 kg (169.8 lbs.), 5th place, final match defeated Jon Jay Chavez, NY Athletic Club

Khymba Johnson — 87 (191.8 lbs.), 5th place, final match defeated Easton Hargrave, Olympia Wrestling Club, 7-0
