NMU women’s soccer team shut out

MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University slipped to 1-1 on the season after a 2-0 shutout loss to St. Cloud State at the NMU Soccer Field on Friday afternoon.

The Huskies from Minnesota broke the scoreless tie about 20 minutes into the second half when SC’s Brooke Bares beat Northern netminder Caroline Glantz from just inside the box.

The Wildcats’ Paula Hafner had several scoring opportunities in the first half. About 11 minutes into the game, a shot by teammate Tabitha Boze was blocked directly to Hafner, then around 20 minutes in, NMU’s Sophia Sachs fed a pass to Hafner.

Glantz denied a prime scoring chance not long after when SC’s Kate Fearing knocked the ball off the crossbar as teammate Hannah Marion kicked the rebound back at the NMU goaltender.

Late in the game, Northern had several more scoring chances. Hafner had her shot smothered by Huskies’ netminder Julia Clifford, while Carmen Villarruel took a crossing pass and was denied on a fingertip save by Clifford.

SC’s Bares got her second goal during the final 10 minutes as the Huskies held a 17-9 overall shots advantage. Glantz made eight saves and Clifford seven, four from shots by Hafner.

Northern, which opened its season with an 11-0 whitewash of Finlandia on Thursday, completes its season-opening homestand with a game against Winona State (Minnesota) at 1 p.m. Sunday back at the NMU Soccer Field.
