NMU football, golf teams back home this weekend

MARQUETTE – Football and golf teams at Northern Michigan University are holding home events this weekend.

After pulling out a dramatic overtime win over Lake Erie, the football Wildcats square off in a nonconference game against Texas NCAA Division II national power Angelo State at 4 p.m. Saturday.

The men’s and women’s golf teams host their lone home events of the fall or spring seasons on Saturday and Sunday with the Wildcat Invitational at the Marquette Golf Club. The men play on the club’s Heritage course at 11 a.m. Saturday and Greywalls couse at 10 a.m. Sunday, while the women are on Greywalls at 1 p.m. Saturday and Heritage at 9 a.m. Sunday.

This marks the first home event for the women’s team, which began competition a year ago and competed exclusively on the road up until now.

Several other NMU teams have road events starting on Friday.

The women’s cross country team opens its season at the Chris Yanni Memorial Invitational in Sault Ste. Marie at 10 a.m. Friday. The Wildcats were ranked No. 8 in the nation and No. 3 in the Midwest in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association preseason rankings.

Northern’s volleyball team moves on to its second tournament in as many weeks after splitting four matches at the Lady Buff Classic in Texas last weekend.

On Friday, NMU plays its opening two matches at the Wisconsin-Parkside Tournament in Kenosha, Wisconsin, taking on St. Cloud State at 1 p.m. EDT and Minnesota-Duluth at 5:30 p.m. Saturday’s matches are against Upper Iowa at 10:30 a.m. and Minnesota State-Moorhead at 3 p.m.

All these matches have implications for Northern’s standing in its region for possible inclusion in the NCAA Division II postseason tournament.

The women’s and men’s soccer teams are also on the road this week. The women go to Minnesota to take on Bemidji State at 8 p.m. EDT Friday and Minnesota-Duluth at 2 p.m. Sunday, while the men, who played their first game in program history Sunday, begin GLIAC action in Ohio with games against Ashland at 7 p.m. Friday and Ohio Dominican at noon Sunday.
