Team USA wrestlers defeat Sweden

MARQUETTE – Three of four Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site wrestlers won matches in Team USA’s 9-3 victory over Sweden at dual Greco-Roman wrestling meet held Wednesday evening at the Superior Dome.

The NMU-OTS quartet joined the contingent of American and Swedish wrestlers who are visiting Northern as part of this week’s Superior International Wrestling Camp.

Among the NMU-OTS group, freshman Randon Miranda of Palmdale, California, competed at 54 kilograms (119.1 pounds) against Albin Jonsson and won by technical fall, 8-0.

OTS freshman Dalton Roberts of downstate Fowlerville took on Anton Rosen at 58 kg (127.9 lbs.) and led 2-0 after round one and finished with a technical fall victory, 11-1.

NMU freshman Jamal DeArmond of Sacramento, California, faced Simon Sjostrom at 71 kg (156.5 lbs.) with DeArmond winning by tech fall 10-0 in the first period.

The fourth OTS wrestler, freshman Austin Chaon of Geneva, Illinois, competed at 80 kg (176.4 lbs.) and lost to a tough Hapus Svensson by tech fall in the first period, 8-0.

Five wrestling camp participants representing Team USA completed swift victories with pins – Leonard Merkin at 72 kg (158.7 lbs.), Kamal Bey at 76 kg (167.6 lbs.), Nick Reenen at 85 kg (187.4 lbs.), Tracy Hancock at 100 kg (220.5 lbs.) and Michael Rodgers at 120 kg (264.6 lbs.).
