Crossing country

MARQUETTE – The Northern Michigan University women’s cross country team’s schedule for this fall has been announced.

The Wildcats have one home meet this year, the Upper Peninsula Championships on Friday, Oct. 14, at the NMU Golf Course.

The season begins with the Chris Yanni Memorial Invitational at Lake Superior State in Sault Ste. Marie on Sept. 10, followed by the Spartan Invitational in Lansing on Sept. 16.

September wraps up with the Roy Griak Invitational in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Sept. 24. Last season, the Wildcats finished second of 35 teams and had two runners place in the top 30. Kameron Burmeister finished 11th overall and Sophie McDonald took 15th.

Next comes with the Conference Crossover Invitational in Romeoville, Illinois, on Oct. 8. After the U.P. Championships in Marquette, the Wildcats head to the GLIAC Championships on Oct. 22 hosted by Ferris State in Big Rapids. Last year, NMU took third at the latter meet.

The NCAA Midwestern Regional takes place Nov. 5 in Evansville, Indiana, with the NCAA National Championships following on Nov. 19 in Bradenton, Florida.

The Wildcats finished fourth at last year’s Midwestern Regional and qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time in a decade, placing ninth in the nationals.
