Wildcats improve chances

MARQUETTE – Four Northern Michigan University track and field athletes competed at a trio of last-chance meets Thursday through Saturday in an attempt to improve their chances at qualifying for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships when the field is selected on Tuesday.

At the GVSU Last Chance meet Saturday in Allendale, the Wildcats’ Samanthia Johnson posted a distance of 158 feet, 7 inches in the discus. That distance stands as the ninth-best posted by a Division II athlete this season.

A day earlier, teammate Jasmine Williams recorded a mark of 152-2 in the discus at the GVSU Second to Last Chance meet. She currently ranks 23rd in the country.

Ine Mylle won the triple jump Thursday at the Hillsdale Last Chance meet with a leap of 39-6. She also finished second at the GVSU Last Chance meet with 39-2.50.

Michelle Juergen placed second in the high jump at the GVSU Last Chance meet, clearing 5-6, and was third at the Hillsdale Last Chance meet went she went over the 5-3.75 level.

Johnson won the discus at the Hillsdale Last Chance meet with a 130-4 toss.

“I’m very proud of our four athletes who competed at the last-chance meets,” NMU head coach Jenny Ryan said. “They battled hard and punishing conditions and represented Northern Michigan well.”
