Wildcats’ Elsner wins golf title
MURRELLS INLET, S.C – Austin Elsner of Northern Michigan University won his first career individual title at the Battle at the Beach after shooting a two-round total of 146 (75-71) at the par-72 Beach course at Tournament Players Club of Myrtle Beach in South Carolina.
Elsner bested the runner-up, Mars Hill’s Adam Lumley, by one stroke.
“It was fun to watch Austin compete at a high level,” NMU head coach Kyle Wittenbach said. “He’s come a long way and has earned this victory in more ways than one.
“We all look forward to watching him further develop as a golfer and teammate.”
As a team, the Wildcats took fifth out of 11 teams, shooting a 620 (309-311).
Queen’s University of Charlotte, North Carolina, won the team title with 606 (296-310).
Rounding out NMU’s scorers were Owen Beyer in a tie for 19th with 157 (76-81), Emil Lundgren in a tie for 25th with 158 (78-80), Martin Eliasson in a tie for 27th with 159 (80-79) and Alex Palmer in a tie for 48th with 167 (84-83).
The Wildcats return to the links Friday and Saturday, March 25-26, when they compete at the GLIAC South Invitational at the Andover Country Club in Lexington, Kentucky.
