Wildcats’ cross country skiers shine at nationals

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – Thursday was a banner day for the Northern Michigan University cross country ski team in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

Not only did the Wildcats place first in the 10-kilometer freestyle competition at the NCAA National Championships, but three NMU skiers captured All-American honors: Ian Torchia, Adam Martin and Jake Brown.

“This was one of our best NCAA results our men’s team has ever had,” Northern coach Sten Fjeldheim said. “They were the best team in the NCAA championships today. I’m super proud of this team.”

Torchia clocked in at 22 minutes, 17.4 seconds to finish as the NCAA runner-up. Martin was fourth in 22.35.2 and Brown ninth in 23.02.9.

The NMU men totaled 90 points to best second-place Denver by 19 points.

On the women’s side in the 5K freestyle, NMU was led by Felicia Gesior in 16th place in 13:38.4. Teammate Vivian Hett was 21st in 13:46.8 and Sophie Schimpl 24th in 13:54.2.

Their finishes secured 32 team points, good for seventh.

Northern will next race on Saturday. The men’s 20K classic is scheduled for 11 a.m, while the women’s 15K classic starts at 1 p.m.
