Wildcat trio earns All-WCHA accolades

EDINA, Minn. – A trio of Northern Michigan University players made the All-WCHA honors list for the 2015-16 season, the league announced on Thursday.

Junior Dominik Shine and senior Darren Nowick gained Second Team berths, while freshman Atte Tolvanen picked up the goaltender nod for the All-Rookie Team.

With 25 points on 12 goals and 13 assists in 25 WCHA games, Shine was one of only four WCHA players to average at least a point per game in league action.

The junior forward finished third in the WCHA in league points and fifth in overall points with 29 (14-15).

A WCHA two-time Player of the Month, Shine put together a six-game point streak that included five goals and four assists from Dec. 12 to Jan. 9 and a nine-game streak (4g-8a) from Jan. 30-Feb. 27.

He finished tied for second in the league with four game-winning goals.

Nowick took fifth in the WCHA scoring race, totaling 24 points with 11 goals and 13 assists in league play. In overall points, he tied for third with 30 (13-17), surpassing his career-high totals in each category.

A senior center, Nowick strung together a six-game point streak with a goal and eight assists from Jan. 15 to Feb. 6 and posted seven multi-point performances.

Among WCHA forwards, he tied for second in blocked shots with 34. He has also taken the most draws (768) of any Wildcat and recorded a faceoff percentage of .552, good for seventh in the WCHA.

Tolvanen was one of the top freshman rookie goaltenders in the nation, finishing first in saves percentage with .929, eighth in saves with 716 and eighth in goals-against average at 2.44.

Among WCHA netminders, he ranked second in saves percentage and fifth in saves.

Tolvanen made 30 or more saves in 13 of his 21 starts, reaching the 40-save plateau six times. The WCHA Rookie of October, he captured four weekly awards during the season.
