Saunders an NMU All-American

INDIANAPOLIS – Freshman Savanna Saunders swam to an All-American finish Saturday at the fourth and final day of competition at the NCAA Division II National Championships.

Saunders finished in fourth place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1 minute, 58.06 seconds, also setting an NMU record. She missed second place by 0.90 of a second as Viktoriya Arkhipova of Wingate won in 1:55.90.

Renars Bundzis finished in a tie for 14th place in the 200 backstroke in 1:47.71.

In the 200 breaststroke, Marc Perello posted a 16th-place finish in 2:01.26.

The Wildcat women’s team finished in 19th place with 63 points.

Queens, North Carolina, won with 567, while Grand Valley had the highest finish of any GLIAC team in fourth with 226. Wayne State was seventh with 208 and Findlay was just ahead of the Wildcats in 18th with 78.

Also from the GLIAC, Tiffin was 26th with 22, Ashland 35th with 12 and Saginaw Valley State tied for 37th with 4.

The Northern men posted 33.5 points for 24th place as Queens also won this title with 449.

GVSU came in seventh with 233.5, Wayne State 18th with 85, Findlay just behind the Wildcats tied for 25th with 31 and SVSU 29th with 9.
