Nowick goes pro

MARQUETTE – Darren Nowick has joined a pair of former Northern Michigan University hockey players after signing an amateur tryout contract with the ECHL’s Missouri Mavericks.

The professional minor league club announced the deal on Wednesday afternoon.

Former Wildcats CJ Ludwig and Reed Seckel are on the Mavericks’ roster. The team is affiliated with the National Hockey League’s New York Islanders and the American Hockey League’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

In his pro debut on Wednesday, Nowick registered a goal and two assists to help the Mavericks clinch the ECHL Central Division title with a 6-3 win over the 2015 Kelly Cup champion Allen Americans.

As a Wildcat senior center this season, Nowick set career highs in goals with 14, assists with 18 and points with 32, leading Northern in points and assists.

He earned All-WCHA Second Team honors after taking fifth in its scoring race with 24 points (11g-13a) in league play.

Nowick posted seven multipoint performances, including a three-point effort that included two goals on Jan. 8 at then-No. 18 Minnesota State and a three-assist outing against Alaska-Anchorage on Feb. 6.

In regular season play, Nowick tied for second among WCHA forwards in blocked shots with 34.

He also took the most draws (768) of any Wildcat and recorded a face-off percentage of .552, good for seventh in the WCHA.
