NMU Nordic skiers shine

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – Nordic skiers Ian Torchia and Adam Martin of Northern Michigan University raced to All-American finishes in their second-straight event Saturday at the NCAA National Championships in Steamboat Spring, Colorado.

Torchia clocked in at 50:22.1 in the 20K classic to take fourth. Martin was not far behind, finishing in 50:39.7 to place fifth.

The duo scored 60 points for the Wildcat men, which brought their total to 150, the best posted by a Nordic men’s team at the National Championships.

“Having two more men on the podium was amazing,” head coach Sten Fjeldheim said. “That makes five All-American finishes this year.”

In the women’s 15K classic, Vivian Hett (15th, 56:11.5), Felicia Gesior (18th, 56:34.3) and Sophie Schimpl (25th, 57.16.4) all cracked the top 25, accumulating 35 points.As a combined team, NMU took eighth with 217 points.
