NMU nets 2 All-Americans

INDIANAPOLIS – Ryan Knox-Leonard and Molly Kearney earned All-American honors Wednesday at the NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships.

Knox-Leonard finished seventh in the 200-yard individual medley in 1 minute, 48.08 seconds to earn All-American honors. In the morning prelims he posted 1:48.01 for a team record.

Kearney placed seventh in the three-meter diving with a score of 436.55 points to also earn All-American honors.

The women’s 200 medley relay of Regan Kilburn, Crystal Bennet, Savanna Saunders and Rachel Borchardt finished in 1:45.54 to place 16th. Kilburn broke the NMU record in her opening leg in the morning in the 50 backstroke in 25.68 seconds.

Borchardt also competed in the 1,000 freestyle, finishing 10th in 10:09.40.

The women stood in 13th place with 21 points while the men were tied for 18th place with 12 points after the meet’s first of four days.

“The men got their first All-American performance in 36 years,” Northern head coach Heidi Voight said. “Kearney was also an All-American on three-meter diving. Today was a great first day of performances.”

The Wildcats return to the pool today for the second day of the meet that concludes on Saturday.
