Wildcats earn pair of WCHA weekly honors

MARQUETTE – Two Northern Michigan University hockey players earned WCHA honors after last weekend’s sweep of Alabama-Huntsville.

Senior goaltender Mathias Dahlstrom was named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman defenseman James Vermeulen earned Rookie of the Week honors after NMU won 3-0 and 3-1 at home.

Dahlstrom was in net last weekend for both wins over Huntsville and made 33 saves on 34 total shots. He also picked up his eighth career shutout on Friday with a 19-save effort and is undefeated at 7-0 this season.

This is the fourth time that Dahlstrom has earned a weekly award from the WCHA. His most recent honor came as Defensive Player of the Week after a sweep of Wisconsin that opened the 2014-15 season.

Vermeulen netted his first goal of the season Friday and he, along with the rest of the NMU defense, held Huntsville to just those 34 shots. Vermeulen blocked three shots over the weekend and had a plus-minus of plus-2.

The Wildcats play at Lake Superior State this weekend for a chance to capture the Cappo Cup and make progress toward securing a home ice berth in the first round of the WCHA playoffs.

Northern is tied with Ferris State for fourth place with four home-ice spots up for grabs. NMU is also just three points out of second place.
