Northern skiers dominate on trails

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Adam Martin of the Northern Michigan University Nordic ski team captured the 15K mass start title at the CCSA Championships during the Mayor’s Cross Country Challenge Saturday at Wirth Park, Minnesota.

Martin, who clocked in at 36:56.4, was one of two Wildcats to make the podium.

He was joined by Ian Torchia, who took second with a time of 36:59.1.

In the women’s 10K mass start, Northern swept the podium.

Vivian Hett and Nicole Schneider tied for first after both crossed the line in 26:02.7.

Wildcat teammate Felicia Gesior came in third with a time of 26:14.6.

Both the Wildcat men and women sit in first place at the end of the first day of racing, totaling 85 and 87 points, respectively.

On the men’s side, Jake Brown (fifth, 37:56.3), Sam Elfstrom (sixth, 37:58.5), Krystof Kopal (seventh, 38:00.7) and Leo Hipp (10th, 38:22.8) cracked the top 10.

In women’s competition, Lea Bunter (sixth, 27:00.5) and Sophie Schimpl (ninth, 27:08.9) made the top 10.

Overall in Mayor’s Cross Country Challenge action, Martin placed first, edging the second-place skier by .7 of a second.

On the women’s side, Hett and Schneider tied for second, finishing .6 of a second behind the first-place skier, who was competing unattached.
