NMU track relay sets record

DULUTH, Minnesota – A Northern Michigan University women’s track relay team set school and facility records at the Lake Superior Challenge meet held Saturday.

The Wildcats’ 4-by-400-meter relay of Danielle Brzezinski, Paige Dutcher, Kieren Becker and Shayla Huebner turned in a time of 4 minutes, 1.65 seconds, more than 11 seconds ahead of the runners-up.

Three NMU athletes won individual titles, too.

“The team competed well today, setting many PRs (personal records),” Northern coach Jenny Ryan said. “And it was great to end the day with a school record.”

Huebner, a Marquette Senior High School graduate, won the 400 dash in 59.38 seconds, Yasmin Jelassi took the 60 in 7.91 and Jenna Long the 200 in 26.53.

Teammate Michelle Juergen finished second in the high jump (5 feet, 3 inches) and long jump (17-8.25), while Jelassi in the 200, Dutcher in the 400 and Becker in the mile also were runners-up.

Other second-place finishers were turned in by Catherine Swiderski in the 5,000, Avadon James in the 60, Samanthia Johnson in the weight throw and Jasmine Williams in the shot put.

Third places went to Hannah Lonergan in the mile, Ine Mylle in the triple jump and Abby Fifarek in the 3,000.

The Wildcats return to action this weekend in The Big Meet at Grand Valley State in Allendale.
