NMU skiers dominate again

HOUGHTON – Northern Michigan University skiers, joined by Wildcats alumnus Kyle Bratrud, swept virtually all the top spots again on the second day of the Central Collegiate Ski Association Invitational held at Michigan Tech on Sunday.

Bratrud was followed by five current NMU skiers in the men’s 20-kilometer classic race, while Vivian Hett led six of her Northern teammates as the Wildcats took seven of the top eight places in the women’s 15K classic.

Hett clocked 49 minutes, 21.9 seconds to win for the women, beating teammate Felicia Gesior by more than 45 seconds. Gesior came in at 50:09.6, while NMU’s Sophie Schimpl was third in 51:08.1.

With Michigan Tech’s Andrea Lee interrupting the sweep in fourth, the next four finishers were Wildcats – Sophie McDonald in 51:10.5; Lea Buenter, 52:39.6; Nicole Schneider, 52:50.7; and Caroline Brisbois, 53:17.8. Teammate Sarah Bezdicek was 10th in 54:25.9.

Bratrud, racing for CXC, won in 55:53.2, just 1.1 seconds ahead of current Wildcat Ian Torchia in 55:54.3.

Following in third through sixth were teammates Adam Martin, 56:34.6; Fredrik Schwencke, 56:46.6; Jake Brown, 58:04.9; and Samuel Elfstrom, 58:41.0. Teammate Krystof Kopal was eighth in 59:43.1 and Leo Hipp 10th in 59:53.2.

Northern’s next meet is the CCSA championships at St. Paul, Minnesota, on Feb. 13-14.
